SC State’s White Cane Day shows what blind can do

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — A man who lost his eyesight when he was accidentally shot 20 years, but went on to get his master’s degree and lead a chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is speaking at South Carolina State University.

Shawn Callaway is the featured speaker Thursday for White Cane Day, set aside to heighten awareness for the blind and show all the things they can achieve.

Calloway lost his sight in 1991, and after recovering from the shooting accident, went back to school, eventually earning a master’s degree in social work from The Catholic University of America.

He is the current director of the Greater Washington, D.C., Chapter of the National Federation for the Blind and is a project officer for the Department of Health and Human Services.
