AAA honors safest towns in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The town of Cameron, city of Hanahan and town of Mount Pleasant are the grand winners of South Carolina’s safest communities awards by the Foundation for Traffic Safety of AAA Carolinas.
The honors were awarded in Columbia at a Thursday luncheon featuring AAA and state officials.
The awards are based on crash statistics, law enforcement officers per capita, traffic safety programs and whether communities have traffic safety divisions.
The grand winners were selected from 15 finalists statewide The other finalists among communities with populations of more than 30,000 were Goose Creek, Rock Hill, Summerville and Sumter. The others with populations between 10,000 and 30,000 included Greenwood, Mauldin, Newberry and Port Royal.
Those with less than 10,000 included Batesburg-Leesville, New Ellenton, North and Pine Ridge.
