Cops: 1 body in Liberty home had gun, note nearby

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Pickens County officials say one of four people found shot dead in Liberty last week left behind a note, and his mother said he was suicidal.

Authorities say 23-year-old Matthew Wayne Hendricks was found dead last week along with his father, brother and grandmother.

Deputies said in a report provided Tuesday that a handgun was found next to Hendricks’ body, and his mother told police her son left a note in the kitchen and had been suicidal. The contents of the note have not been released.

Coroner Kandy Kelley says three of the deaths have been ruled homicides, but more tests are needed to determine how Hendricks died.

Authorities have said since finding the four bodies Friday that there appears to be no danger to the community.
