Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — With the weather warming up in the Capital City, more and more people are venturing outside to enjoy the sunshine. However, with all the pollen floating around this time of year, being outside could impact allergy sufferers. “I hate it,” said Chris Weimer. “When I walk to my car and see all that yellow, I just know it’s going to be a bad day.” “I feel sorry for people, it’s a terrible time of year for so many people,” said Kay Grooms. The CDC reports more than 40 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies. Family Doctor, Dr. Michael Reed says this year’s prolonged winter brought a quick, hard-hitting allergy season to the midlands. “I think it compacted us, I think it delayed it until it all came at one time,” said Dr. Reed. Dr. Reed explains allergy symptoms are similar to those of a viral illness, but there are specific signs to look for pertaining to allergies. “Really more itchy, stuffy, watery, scratchy,” explained Dr. Reed. “Much the same as a cold would be but usually not accompanied by a fever or anything worsening like a viral illness would be.” While Dr. Reed said he doesn’t think this year’s allergy season will be much worse than last year, people susceptible to allergies should be proactive. “When you know your season is coming and you have some of those symptoms, it’s better to get on the medicine earlier and they’re more affective the longer you stay on them,” said Dr. Reed. Aside from taking over the counter medicine, Dr. Reed also suggests allergy sufferers avoid over-exposure to the outdoors and stay in air-conditioned facilities.
