Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Monday, Rick Perry made a campaign stop in Columbia. Less than a week after formally announcing his 2016 run for the White House, he decided to visit the South Carolina Military Museum in the Capital City. “If you elect me President, I promise you, America will be America again,” said Former Texas Governor Rick Perry. Monday afternoon, the Republican presidential hopeful made his first official campaign trip to the Palmetto State. He focused his message on the optimistic future he sees for our country. “I know that America’s best days are in front of us,” said Perry. Flanked by Veterans, the former Texas Governor delivered his speech outside the South Carolina Military Museum, a site representing his commitment to improve veterans affairs and create a stronger military. “We stand on the shoulders of giants, of great and extraordinary individuals,” said Perry on the topic of Veterans. As he laid out his vision for the country, Perry focused on several key issues, such as opening the Keystone XL Pipeline, to create more jobs and wealth, and get back to the core of the constitution. “All too often, we’re ham-stringed by Washington, D.C.,” explained Perry. “They put strings and red tape in there that don’t allow you to be innovative and creative. It is time to have a President in the United States that respects our constitution.” A motivating message for some South Carolinians in the crowd. “I thought he was positive, he offered encouragement, he was an upbeat person and I think it bodes well with the country right now, they need that type of person on the campaign trail,” said Lou Nolan. But others, while still in favor of his ideas, said some challenges lie ahead for Perry, as one of many in the running to be Commander in Chief. “We just need a strong, constitutional conservative and if Rick Perry is that guy then more power to him, but if not then he needs to step aside and let somebody in there that will,” said Vernon Samuelson. The Former Texas Governor made his way across the state later Monday to participate in a town hall meeting in Mount Pleasant. Campaign officials for Perry said we can expect to see Perry back in South Carolina several times next month.
