Crews find body of missing hunter in York County

SHARON, S.C. (AP) — York County officials have found the body of a hunter who had been missing about 24 hours.

Sheriff’s deputies say the body of 72-year-old Gene Coleman Welch of Sharon was found late Wednesday morning.

A neighbor says Welch typically went hunting every morning before going to a store to meet friends. Katie Franklin says she and her husband spotted Welch’s truck when they returned home Tuesday evening and alerted authorities.

Sheriff’s deputies, officers from the Department of Natural Resources, the SLED Aviation Wing and members of the community searched Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Officials could not confirm the cause of Welch’s death.
