FBI: Charleston Mass Shooting Suspect Captured

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The FBI is confirming to ABC Columbia News that Dylann Roof, the suspect in the mass shooting in Charleston, was arrested in Shelby, NC. The arrest happened around 11:15am Wednesday Morning. New details are coming in as law enforcement works to gather evidence in the case. What was supposed to be a time of worship and prayer at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston turned into shock and sorrow for the community Wednesday night. At 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, the Charleston Police responded to 110 Calhoun Street where the church is located because of a shooting. Police Chief Greg Mullen said during a press conference Wednesday night that a prayer meeting and Bible study were taking place during that time. He also confirmed that nine people have died. Three of them were men, and six of them were women. Eight people were found in the church building when first responders arrived, while the ninth person died later at the hospital. The coroner has not released the identity of any of the victims. ABC Columbia News reached out to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, who provided us with a criminal history on Roof. Those records show Roof was arrested on drug charges back in February 2015. Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen described before Roof’s arrest that he was a “very dangerous individual”. Roof is 21 years old and was driving a four-door black sedan with distinctive front license plates. He was seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans, and Timberland boots.
