Suspect arrested after officer-involved shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook announces that he has requested the SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate an officer involved shooting incident. The incident began after Officers responded to the 2200 block of Santee Avenue for a reported armed robbery shortly before 11:30 p.m. on July 31, 2015. A female says that a male suspect pointed a gun at her and a friend to demand their belongings. The victims complied and were not harmed during the incident. The suspect ran away from the scene, and Officers quickly identified a location of a suspect in a field near the intersection of Taylor Street and Two Notch Road. Upon making contact with the male suspect, he fired several shots at a CPD officer who returned fire. The officer was not harmed during the incident. After the exchange of gunfire, the suspect ran to the rooftop at the 2368 Taylor Street and refused to surrender. Additional officers including CPD SWAT Operators were called to the scene to provide tactical assistance. A SLED helicopter was requested to assist and provided an aerial coverage of the suspect who was located on the roof of the business. After more than three hours the suspect surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody. The suspect has been identified as Ibin Patterson (DOB: 5-22-1970). He was released from the hospital this morning for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg. Patterson is charged with Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime and Attempted Murder. The officer involved has been placed on administrative duty with pay pending the outcome of the SLED investigation. The Columbia Fire Department and EMS assisted CPD and SLED during the incident. Two concurrent investigations by CPD and SLED are ongoing. While officers were working this incident, additional CPD officers responded to the 800 block of Harden Street shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015. They found a male who was suffered a non-life threatening gunshot to the arm. Upon further investigation it was determined that the victim argued with a male suspect on Green Street near Harden Street before the shooting. A weapon was not recovered and the victim refuses to cooperate with investigators at this time.
