CHAPIN, S.C. (WOLO) — The 36th Annual Labor Day Festival and Parade in Chapin got underway Monday. With Labor Day being the unofficial end-of-summer many Chapin residents came out to celebrate the holiday with family and friends. “Chapin is a wonderful community and this is just another example of what great communities do,” said Dr. Akil Ross. On Monday, hundreds of families lined the streets of Chapin for the 36th Labor Day Festival and Parade. “I love seeing everyone that I’ve grown up with, everyone and all their families, we all come out to have a good, fun day,” said Lauren Hardin. A long-standing tradition, the annual event brought the community together for a day of celebrating the men and women in the American work force. “Coming out here to celebrate as a larger family of Chapin, I think that’s why we come out here every year,” said Ross. While the parade served as a tradition for many in Chapin, it also served as a political platform for several presidential candidates. “Our campaign is really about trying to help the American worker and trying to create better jobs for wage earners,” said Republican candidate, Rick Santorum. Santorum made a campaign stop in the Palmetto State to spread that message and spend time interacting with South Carolinians. While he was the only candidate to walk in the parade, several other candidates made their presence known. Volunteers from several of the campaigns participated in the parade including Carly Fiorina, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. The day’s actitivites includes a concert featuring Shelby Raye and The Keith Dominick Band on the Beaufort Street Satge, a Cupcake Eating Contest, children‘s activities and, classic car and train show in the Mt. Horeb parking lot and at the American Legion Post 1934 respectively. The Chapin Branch Library will host their annual book sale in Chapin Town Hall. The parade was sponsored by Lexington Medical Center.
