Savannah River Site contractor cutting 100 jobs
AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — A contractor at a former nuclear complex in South Carolina is cutting up to 100 jobs.
Officials with Savannah River Remediation said Tuesday the liquid waste contractor’s cuts have been approved by the U.S. Department of Energy and would happen in two phases. If 100 employees don’t leave voluntarily by Nov. 18, SRR officials say layoffs will happen in December.
Earlier this year, Savannah River Remediation and another contractor, Wackenhut Services, each cut 100 positions.
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, SRS’ primary contractor, employs about 5,500 at the site and was given Department of Energy clearance to cut as many as 1,400 jobs.
This year, more than 1,000 workers have been affected. Company officials have said the final number is likely to be fewer than 1,400.
