Occupy Protests Resume After Arrests
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — The day after 19 Occupy Columbia protesters spent the night in jail, many of them returned to the State Capitol, signs in hand. Though fewer in number, occupiers resumed demonstrations Thursday morning, just hours after spending the night at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and facing a bond hearing. One protester tells ABC Columbia the group plans to have a special assembly at 7:00p.m. This, after Gov. Nikki Haley ordered demonstrators to disband from the State House grounds each day at 6:00p.m. Gov. Nikki Haley issued an order to evict the demonstrators 33 days after they began encamping on the grounds. Haley says documentation of people ‘going to the bathroom’ on the grounds and other concerns prompted the eviction notice. The Occupy Columbia movement is the local version of Occupy Wall Street, which protests what demonstrators believe to be an unequal distribution in the country’s wealth.
