SC board to consider cutting down 60 grand trees

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Charleston’s zoning board will consider an application to cut down 60 grand trees on the last wooded stretch of Maybank Highway so that a 300-apartment retirement complex can be built there.

The Post & Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/t9PWQ8) that the project manager of the Coastal Conservation League says the group won’t oppose the permit to cut down 60 grand trees among 107 on the 22-acre site.

The decision followed a walk-though of the site Friday and a review of plans with a landscape architect for the developer and Charleston planners. A “grand tree” is a large native hardwood that has some protections from being cut down.

The Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals will consider the application to cut down the trees Wednesday.
