No new charges in case of overturned SC conviction
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Prosecutors say they won’t bring new charges against a Travelers Rest man whose murder conviction was overturned after eight years in prison.
Prosecutor Walt Wilkins said Tuesday he will not seek additional charges against 39-year-old Jack Edward Earl Parker in the 2001 shooting death of Robert Lee Stewart, his sister’s boyfriend.
Parker was released from prison after the state Supreme Court earlier this year overturned his conviction because of double jeopardy.
Jurors deadlocked during Parker’s first trial in 2003, with defense attorneys arguing prosecutors had given them a crime scene video with graphic images removed but showed jurors the full version.
Parker was sentenced to life in prison in 2005 after a second jury found him guilty of murder. His defense attorney has said Parker killed Stewart in self-defense.
