Senate to debate fate of gov’s restructuring bill
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina senators have agreed to debate a measure that will decide the fate this year of Gov. Nikki Haley’s restructuring agenda.
With no debate Wednesday, senators agreed to put a resolution on the calendar that allows them to debate restructuring legislation.
The Legislature is in Columbia on a wrap-up session. But they agreed two weeks ago to limit their work to a few issues, including redrawing election district lines and working out state spending plan compromises.
Changing that legislative agenda requires a two-thirds vote in the House and Senate. Haley wants legislators to include four restructuring bills on the agenda. At the top of her list is a bill that moves much of the state’s bureaucracy into a new, Cabinet-level Department of Administration that reports to her.
