Scores of SC seniors wait in heat for vouchers
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) — Dozens of senior citizens had to wait in a blazing sun to get $25 food vouchers at a senior center in Moncks Corner.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that several of those who waited Thursday said they couldn’t understand why the elderly had to wait outside when area churches were willing to provide an alternative to the crowded county senior center.
Berkeley County Seniors Director Tonya Sweatman says no one offered her a bigger space and if they talked to her staff, she did not get the message.
She says the county plans to move the senior center into a larger space in the coming months.
Low-income seniors can get $25 vouchers good at farmers markets.
