VA probes spending at shelter for homeless vets

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs is investigating whether the former director of a homeless shelter for vets used $122,000 in grant money for her own use.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the probe centers on Nancy Cook, who was fired last month as executive director of the Good Neighbor Center in North Charleston.

The government says the center owes the government the money that an audit found was spent inappropriately.

But Cook’s attorney dismisses the federal findings. He says the shelter’s board should have hired an accountant to challenge the audit results.

Cook was executive director for more than 15 years. She was fired by a unanimous vote of the shelter’s board.

Cook has sued the board for breach of contract.
