Video in Suspect Beating Shown in Court
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — For the first time, a judge views surveillance video in the assault of a Columbia teenage last summer and must decide whether one of the alleged juvenile offenders will be tried as an adult. In a waiver hearing Tuesday for a 15-year-old charged in the severe beating of a Carter Strange, new surveillance video of the victim’s final moments before the attack, were revealed. Judge Robert Armstrong saw the video and then listened to testimony from the solicitor and the defense. Prosecutors claim the juvenile is one of four teenagers who participated in the beating of Strange in downtown Columbia June 20th. The defendant maintains he witnessed three others attack Strange but that he had nothing to do with the assault. Both the prosecution and defense are expected to call witnesses Wednesday before the judge rules whether the teen will be tried as an adult.
