Erskine College won’t give church more authority
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — The Erskine College board of trustees has voted against giving the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church more authority over the school’s board.
The Greenville News reported (http://grnol.co/wlvRc4 ) that school officials said Wednesday the board does not want to break away from the Greenville-based denomination. The denomination founded the school in Due West nearly 175 years ago.
The denomination’s ruling body removed half of the college’s trustees two years ago after church leaders investigated complaints from students upset with what they said were liberal professors.
After a legal battle, the denomination dropped its proposal to withhold school funding and the school’s board agreed to drop its lawsuit against the church.
The 14 board members who had been removed were reinstated.
The denomination plans to discuss the board’s latest decision in June.
