James Island to vote April 24 on incorporation

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Voters in James Island will vote next month on their fourth effort to create the town of James Island.

A referendum is set for April 24 on the incorporation effort.

If the referendum is approved, voters would choose a mayor and town council on July 31.

Former Mayor Bill Woolsey said he thinks there are about 8,700 registered voters in what would be the town’s borders, with a total of about 11,000 residents.

Three previous incorporation efforts have been overturned, all based on legal challenges by the city of Charleston.
