SC Navy brig opening new housing unit, weight room

CHARLESTON. S.C. (AP) — The U.S. Navy brig in South Carolina is officially opening a new housing unit, weight room and maintenance building.

Officials at the Navy Consolidated Brig near Charleston say the new 24,000-square -foot housing unit opening Tuesday can accommodate an additional 80 prisoners, for a total of 480 beds.

The unit includes sleeping quarters, toilets and prison day rooms.

Officials broke ground on the $8 million project in April 2010.
