Woman accused of trying smuggle ammo into prison

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Greer woman has been charged with trying to smuggle ammunition into a state prison near Charleston.

Authorities say 35-year-old Terri Diane Newman was arrested Wednesday on Interstate 26.

Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom said deputies arrested the woman after corrections officers overheard a conversation between the suspect and an inmate she is accused of trying to help.

Authorities say tools including hack saw blades and box cutters were found in her car along with a case of .45-caliber ammunition. Newman was charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle and aiding in the escape of a prisoner. It was not immediately clear if she has an attorney.

Authorities say the inmate she was trying to help is serving a life term and tried to escape last year.
