House approves SC Senate districts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina House has given preliminary approval to new state Senate districts based on the latest Census figures.

Lawmakers voted 98 to nothing Tuesday for the Senate districts that senators earlier had approved.

Also Tuesday, a Senate panel agreed to put the new U.S. House seat for South Carolina in the northeastern corner of the state and along the coast. The full Judiciary Committee expected to debate the bill later Tuesday.

Redistricting is required every decade to reflect population changes from the Census. South Carolina picked up a seventh district because of population increases.

The Legislature also is redrawing maps for 124 state House seats. The House and Senate approved their own plans last week.

The Senate could approve the House plan this week.
