COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — In the midst of loud and boisterous protests, marches and rallies, local college students take a different approach to honoring the memory of Trayvon Martin. Students at Benedict College are planning, ‘A Tribute to Trayvon Martin: A Call to Action.’ It’s a mellow, spiritual event organizers say will cross generational and cultural lines in an effort to have people stand in solidarity, while remembering slain teenager, Trayvon Martin. Martin was 17 when he was shot and killed in Florida more than a month ago by volunteer neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman claims self defense in the killing and has not been formally arrested, which has ignited national outrage. Student leaders at Benedict say they want to give the public a change to channel their anger in a positive way. The event will be held in Antisdel Chapel on the school’s campus, Monday, April 2, at 6:00pm. The award winning Benedict College Gospel Choir is scheduled to perform. The organizer of Columbia’s landmark 1K Hoodie March, Kyle Greene, is also expected to address the crowd. The event is free and open to the public.
