Flooding leads Richland County to spray for mosquitoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Richland County officials say they are spraying for mosquitoes that are breeding in standing water left from the massive floods earlier this month.

The county will send a truck to spray Wednesday evening around Lake Katherine near Forest Acres.

Officials ask anyone with an allergy to insecticide or who keeps honeybees to call the county so they won’t spray in that area.

Lows have dipped into the 30s the past few days, but the county says it is still warm enough during the day for mosquitoes to survive, reproduce and bite people.

The county also is asking people to look around their property and dump any standing water that could be breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
