Virginia Family Slain

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) _ A hearing for a man charged in the stabbing deaths of his wife and three stepchildren in Newport News has been continued until January 4th.
John Moses Ragin’s status hearing had been set for Wednesday in Newport News Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The 36-year-old Ragin is being held without bond.

Greenville Deputy Followed Procedures in Crash

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ The Greenville County sheriff’s office says a deputy was following proper procedures when he pursued a suspicious vehicle that wrecked, killing the driver.

A deputy was pursuing a vehicle thought to contain a man who had been the object of a massive manhunt that prompted the lockdown of 10 schools on Oct. 28.

Bachmann adds SC Campaign Adviser

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has added an adviser to her South Carolina presidential campaign.

Bachmann said Wednesday that Wesley Donehue has joined her team. The outspoken Republican activist will serve as a spokesman and strategist, as well as help the national new media team.

Dog Fighting Ring Update

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Richland County authorities say 15 of the 24 dogs seized during a September raid on a dog-fighting operation are in foster homes.
Sheriff Leon Lott said Tuesday that $1,700 in donations helped pay to care for the dogs.

SC Math, Reading Scores Virtually Unchanged

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina students’ scores on national math and reading tests haven’t changed much in two years and continue to hover below the national average.

The U.S. Department of Education released data Tuesday showing South Carolina’s fourth- and eighth-graders posted scores that were between two and five points below the national average.
