Spurrier Pleased With Spring Progress

The University of South Carolina football team began its final week of spring ball on Tuesday afternoon at the new practice fields. It marked practice No. 13 of the allotted 15 spring practice sessions.
“We’ve gotten quite a bit done,” head coach Steve Spurrier said. “I think it’s been productive.”

Gamecocks Host Appalachian St. Tuesday

South Carolina (21-11) returns home for a two-game homestand at Carolina Stadium beginning on Tuesday night hosting Appalachian State (10-23). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with the game broadcast on SEC Network Plus and on the Gamecock IMG Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, “The Game.”

The South Carolina women’s basketball team will be honored on Tuesday evening prior to the Gamecock baseball game versus Appalachian State. Gamecock fans will join the team in celebrating the historic 2014-15 season, including the regular-season and SEC Tournament championships and advancing to the NCAA Final Four. Head coach Dawn Staley and team members will be honored on the field, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Veteran Tigers Tough To Block In Scrimmage

Clemson held a physical, two-hour practice on Monday. The workout included a one-on-one hitting drill in period one and finished with an hour of scrimmage work in the indoor facility. Dabo Swinney’s Tigers are preparing for the annual Spring Game in Memorial Stadium on Saturday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m.

“This was a tough practice,” said Swinney, who had given his team four days off for the Easter holiday. “We challenged them with a physical drill right from the beginning, then had the half scrimmage. We continue to keep evaluating our players in all of the drills and scrimmages.

USC Women Come Up 1 Point Short In Final Four

After trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, an effort led by senior Aleighsa Welch willed No. 3/4 South Carolina back into the game. But No. 2/2 Notre Dame grabbed the lead with just 16 seconds to go, and the Gamecocks’ final shot was off the mark in a 66-65 decision in the national semifinals at Amalie Arena.

UNC Comeback Keeps Clemson From Sweep

North Carolina overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat Clemson 8-7 Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 18-13 overall and 7-8 in the ACC. The Tigers, who won the series 2-1, fell to 16-15 overall and 7-8 in ACC play.

Mitchell Wins Dawn Staley Award

South Carolina junior guard Tiffany Mitchell captured her first national player of the year honor today when The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia named her the winner of The Dawn Staley Award for 2015. Established in 2013, the award recognizes the nation’s best guard in Women’s Division I college basketball as defined by the skills that Staley possessed throughout her career – ball handling, scoring, ability to distribute the basketball and win to win.
