LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Other than a 2010 upset that sparked a wild celebration at Commonwealth Stadium, Kentucky has usually come up short against South Carolina.
A solid defensive effort from the Newberry Wolves helped the scarlet and gray snap a two-game losing skid with a 33-10 victory over the Wingate Bulldogs at Setzler Field on Saturday night.
With the win, Newberry is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are tied with the Kentucky Wildcats 17-17 after one half of play.
The Gamecocks controlled the clock early while establishing the running game with a time-consuming 19 play opening drive (17 which were running plays) which burned 12:35 off the clock and was capped off by a 1-yd Mike Davis touchdown. Davis finished with 9 carries for 41 yards on the drive.
