Florida catcher Mike Zunino has been chosen the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year. Zunino is the first Florida player to win the award in its 26-year history. He was presented the award Friday at a news conference at TD Ameritrade Park.

South Carolina sophomore infielder Erik Payne is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Baseball Championship, it was announced on Thursday evening. Payne received the honor at a private version of the Opening Ceremonies at Mancuso Hall at the Omaha Civic Center. Severe thunderstorms cancelled the public Opening Ceremonies at TD Ameritrade Park.

Alleged Auburn Shooter Surrenders To Police
A defense attorney says a man accused of killing three people near Auburn University over the weekend has turned himself in. Attorney Susan James says in a phone interview that Desmonte Leonard was taken into custody on Tuesday. Leonard is wanted for killing three people and wounding three at a party near Auburn University on Saturday.
SC Natives Tolleson, Wieters Helps O’s Beat Phils
Lowcountry native Matt Wieters doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th, and the Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Sunday to extend their run of successive extra-inning victories to nine. Upstate native and former Gamecock Steve Tolleson hit a three-run homer for the Orioles, who bounced back from a 4-1 deficit to keep Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee winless this season.
