USC Women Dominate #16 Tar Heels, 79-48

South Carolina used efficient offense, stifling defense and strong rebounding to upend No. 18/16 North Carolina 79-48 in the Carolina’s Challenge Sunday afternoon at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Gamecocks (9-2) exploded out of the gate and never looked back, executing the game plan to perfection from the opening tip. While the offense surged, shooting 58.3 percent in the first half, the defense was just as electric throughout the contest as South Carolina held the nation’s highest scoring defense 39.5 points below its season average. It was the third-largest margin of victory over a nationally ranked team in Gamecock history.

Talib Zanna had 12 points and 14 rebounds to help the Panthers (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) ease by South Carolina State 69-55 on Saturday night, proving life should be just fine without highly touted freshman Khem Birch, who left the team this week to return to his native Canada. Brandon Riley led the Bulldogs with 21 points.

Irmo Honors Head Boys’ Basketball Coach

During a pregame ceremony Friday night, Irmo High School officially honored its coach by putting his name on the floor. The defending state champion Yellow Jackets promptly went out on Tim Whipple Court and beat Ridge View 57-52 in a AAAA state championship game rematch.

Ellington’s Double-Duty Schedule Set

South Carolina’s two-sport star Bruce Ellington will miss one more basketball game to join the football team at the Capital One Bowl. The school said Friday at Ellington would not play Dec. 31 when the basketball team takes on USC Upstate at Colonial Life Arena. He will be back on the court January 3rd when the Gamecocks take on South Carolina State.
