Everybody who files an income tax return in South Carolina would get a rebate check of at least $100 in a bill being considered by the state Senate.

Senators voted 33-1 on Thursday to ban what is commonly called the “Carolina Squat.”
The House budget includes a $4,000 raise for teachers, a 3% raise for state employees and extra pay for law enforcement officers. It also includes a $600 million income tax cut and $1 billion on roads from accelerating the widening of clogged interstates to repaving and improving safety on rural highways.
The proposal faces one last routine vote before heading to the House, which has failed to pass a number of similar bills in recent years.
A bill to fine businesses that fire workers who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19 is headed to the South Carolina Senate floor.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the bill that would cut the state’s top 7% income tax rate to 6.5% next year and push all other taxpayers into a 3% bracket.
Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey’s proposal also would fine a private company requiring the shot $7,500 per employee fired because of that mandate.
A bill that would assure churches can meet in person in South Carolina during a pandemic or other emergency as long as other essential businesses can stay open is advancing in the state Senate.
