COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Out-of-state students at the University of South Carolina sample some of what Southern cuisine has to offer as a way to feel more comfortable about being in the south. Several newcomers to the campus gathered Tuesday for the annual ‘What’s the Big Deal About Sweet Tea?’ session. The event is designed specifically for those from a different culture and helps them get acquainted with foods southerners know and love, including: grits, biscuits and gravy, boiled peanuts and sweet tea. Many tried the items for the very first time. Sweet tea, grits and biscuits and gravy were a big hit. Boiled peanuts, not so much.
