SC State board meeting to discuss president pay

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State University’s trustees are meeting to talk about how much their newly chosen president should get paid.

The Orangeburg school’s board is meeting Friday. On the agenda is an closed-door discussion on a compensation package for the new president.

Trustees voted 6-5 last week to pick Thomas Elzey as S.C. State’s next president. Elzey currently serves as executive vice president for finance, administration and operations at The Citadel and will take over his new job in June.

S.C. State had been seeking a new president for more than a year. George Cooper resigned in March 2012 after firing eight administrators following an internal investigation.

In January, federal prosecutors charged the one-time chairman of the university’s board of trustees with taking kickbacks. Jonathan Pinso is awaiting trial.
