Study: More carp in Lake Murray; DNR not sure
LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) — The utility that manages Lake Murray thinks it is time to add more weed-eating fish to the lake. But South Carolina wildlife officials think it isn’t time to add more carp to the largest lake in the Midlands.
The State newspaper (http://bit.ly/16fBD7f ) reports that carp are the main way weeds are controlled on Lake Murray.
A study commissioned by South Carolina Electric & Gas found that weeds other than hydrilla are starting to pop up under water, which is a first sign that there aren’t enough carp in the lake to keep the weeds in check. The study suggests adding 1,100 carp to the 5,000 fish currently in the lake at a cost of $8,000.
But the Department of Natural Resources says it hasn’t seen problems yet.
