Orangeburg commission head seeks registration post

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The head of the Orangeburg County Election Commission is applying to become the paid head of the county’s Voter Registration Department.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/117llpd) that Jimmy Johnson Jr., a member of the commission for almost six years, recused himself from discussions Tuesday on hiring a new voter registration director for the county.

The position will become vacant now that Howard Jackson has been hired as elections director in Richland County. He last day in the Orangeburg job is June 14. Jackson was making $45,000 a year in Orangeburg County and could make as much as $85,000 in Richland County.

During the November elections in Richland County, some polls had fewer voting machines than were legally required. Some ballots weren’t cast until after midnight Election Day.
