President faces scrutiny in SC State changes

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The new president of South Carolina State University is proposing adding six administrative positions he says are badly needed.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/15ACBrjeg ) President Thomas Elzey is proposing adding three new vice presidents as well as positions for a provost, an associate provost and an associate provost for sponsored programs.

One trustee, Robert Nance questioned Elzey during a Thursday board meeting whether the positions could be created without approval by the board. He also said the school for the past several years has been trying to cut back on a top-heavy administration. He says the Elzey plan, seems to be bringing one back.

Elzey says he disagrees, and the new posts are needed because some areas of administration have been badly neglected in recent years.
