APNewsBreak: Attack on SC teen carefully planned

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The man who kidnapped and killed a 15-year-old Columbia girl orchestrated almost every part of the crime, including a final attempt to frame someone else through the victim’s cellphone that likely sealed his fate.

The Associated Press reviewed the investigative file in the Gabrielle Swainson case. It took months for prosecutors to produce hundreds of pages of documents requested through a Freedom of Information Act request. Part of the delay happened because Swainson’s killer, Freddie Grant, is still being investigated in the disappearance of a second woman.

The documents show Grant planned almost every step of the attack and sexual assault and remained unhelpful and defiant until the end, when he agreed to plead guilty if prosecutors dropped an accessory charge against his daughter.

Grant is serving 30 years in prison.
