COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — During Allen University’s 146th Founder’s Day, school officials and clergy unveiled the commemorative stamp in honor of the founder of the A.M.E. Church.
Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and it’s first bishop, was selected to be featured on the U.S. Postal Service’s Black Heritage Commemorative Series.
The stamp was formally unveiled Feb. 2 at Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia.
It is the 39th stamp in the Black Heritage stamp series, which began in 1978 with Harriet Tubman.
ABC Columbia spoke with Harry Spratlin, district communications coordinator with the U.S. Postal Service.
The keynote speaker for the event was Reverend E. Robert Thomas, Instructor in the Division of Religion.
Thomas also serves at the university’s chaplain, and is the pastor of Spring Hill AME Church.
