Midlands Damage from Hurricane Mathew: Downed Trees, Power Outages

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)–Hurricane Mathew came up the coast and brought heavy rain and wind to the Midlands Saturday.

Lots of trees down across the Midlands, especially in Lexington and the City of Columbia.

In Lexington County, Sheriff Jay Koon says the storm has caused around 20 downed trees in that county.

Over in the Town of Lexington the traffic signals were out near Sunset Blvd. and Northside Blvd. early Saturday morning.

There were downed trees on Third Avenue, in Gibson Park, off Endicot Street and other areas in Lexington.

Flooding was an issue in some low lying areas of West Columbia and a few streets in the City, but ABC Columbia crews did not spot any major issues as they hit the roadways around town.

Our Grace Joyal spotted a tree down across Lincoln Street in Elmwood Park, a tree down off Park Street.

City of Columbia crews are out in the streets and working to repair and remove, our crews were on scene when City of Columbia crews removed a tree from the road off Park Street.

In Orangeburg, officials tell us I26 WB at 152& I95 SB at 98mm are blocked due to downed trees.

In terms of power outages Governor Nikki Haley says Saturday morning there were at least 437, 000 customers across South Carolina in the dark.

The S.C. Emergency Response Team is reminding residents that all coastal evacuation orders are still in effect.
