Columbia Fire: Safety tips for heating during these cold days and nights
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)–As we deal with these cold temperatures, the Columbia Fire Department has tips to keep you safe when it comes to heating your home or apartment.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters and other heating devices are the second leading cause of home fires in the U.S. each year.
Mike DeSumma with the Columbia Richland Fire Department says to be sure to keep space heaters on a level surface at least three feet away from anything flammable.
He also says they should be plugged directly into the wall and not into a power strip or extension cord. Also, when it comes to space heaters, if the cord is frayed or damaged do not use it.
