Alvin S. Glenn faces possible closure in 90 days following SCDC inspection

Alvin S Glenn Assaults

Richland Co., S.C. (WOLO)–The future of a Midlands detention center may be in doubt.
In a letter obtained by ABC Columbia News, Rodney Pigford, Branch Chief of Inspections for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, notified Richland County Administrator Leonardo Brown of the possibility of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center closing its doors if it does not meet the minimum standards established by the South Carolina Association of Counties or the appropriate fire and health code standards.
According to the letter, the county has 90 days to make the necessary corrections.

In a statement in response, a county spokesperson writes in part, “The county remains committed to collaborating with department of corrections to enhance conditions at the detention center, prioritizing the safety and security of detainees and staff.”

The letter follows an inspection prompted by allegations of unsafe conditions and instances of violence in the facility.

The US Justice Department is also investigating Alvin S. Glenn.
