Oooos and Awwws from the lights in the sky on Sunday night
Tyler Ryan learns about fireworks safety as well as experiences some of the new trends
COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) – As we get ready to ring in the New Year, the skies will be bright at mid-night as ooos and ahhhs are heard across the globe driven by the magic of gunpowder.
Fireworks have been around since the second century BC, and continue to be a tradition to celebrate a new year, the birth of a Nation, or even reveling if you are having a Bobby or a Sue. According to Discount Firework’s Ruthie Hughes, lots of colors are the new trend in fireworks. Another fun trend are toy like fireworks.
Hughes don’t point out a few things to think about as you celebrate:
- Fireworks packaged in brown paper are made for professional displays – avoid buying.
- Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities, especially with sparklers.
- Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire and to douse used fireworks before discarding in trash.
- Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.
- Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
- Never try to re-light or pickup fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device when lighting.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
