Don’t make these boat detailing mistakes…so says The Boat Butler

Tyler Ryan learns the story of The Boat Butler and will also stop using bleach

COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) – A few years ago, Jason Hardage had the idea to teach some core principals like honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic to his sons.  The idea started as a modest boat cleaning business, where they three of them would go to peoples houses and clean their boats.  He hoped that by showing them how to develop a business, and how to communicate directly with people (not through a text), would help them also learn the value of earning a dollar.

Fast-forward five or so years, and The Boat Butlers has expanded to a full service operation, going way beyond cleaning, and has provided those two young men, now 17 and 19 with the tools they need to purchase their own vehicles, jet skis, and for life.  And in the case of the older son, is providing a Clemson education through a second location in the Upstate.

The Boat Butlers now do LEDs, ceramics, graphics, audio and so much more.

Through the years, the Hardage’s and their team have learned many best practices, and some “never do’s.”

They offer these tips:
Boat care “Do’s”:
– Keep those seats & upholstery conditioned with Vinyl Guard (from UV degradation and mold)
– Use PH neutral products for cleaning and avoid bleach.
– Wax every 6 months or ceramic coating every few years for UV & chemical protection.
– Keep covered if possible
– Remove the scum and algae from the hull to improve speed and fuel efficiency
– Always wash down the boat after applying strong cleaning products.
– Leave seats open if possible for the boat to dry out and reduce mold.
Boat Care “Don’ts”:
– NO BLEACH on seats & upholstery (deteriorates vinyl material and seams)
– Stay away from dark colored boat covers (will discolor or “sunburn” the vinyl)
– Avoid washing with brushes on shiny fiberglass or metal surfaces
– Avoid applying cleaning chemicals when the surface is hot or in direct sunlight.
– Avoid LEDs and electronics that are not waterproof.
– Do not apply wax on an oxidized boat
