Camden prepares for 89th running of Carolina Cup
CAMDEN, SC (WOLO) — An annual rite of spring, the Carolina Cup brings tens of thousands of people to Camden to experience steeplechase horse racing.
This year’s 89th edition expects to do just the same.
“We’re bringing a lot of people to Camden this year. The ticket sales have been strong. The weather looks like it’s going to be fantastic,” said Toby Edwards, Carolina Cup director. “We’ve got six wonderful races anchored by the MUSC Health Carolina Cup. We’re excited about the racing tomorrow.”
When people think of horse racing, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Kentucky Derby. But unlike that event, Carolina Cup is a steeplechase race.
“Steeplechase racing is over a longer distance, two plus miles and 10 jumps,” Edwards said. “It’s more about stamina than about speed.”
Carolina Cup is all about shopping, spring fashion, tailgate parties and of course a day full of racing.
“The race course is in fantastic shape. Mother Nature has been kind to us,” Edwards said. “We also now have an irrigation system on the race course. We want to provide the safest possible racing surface for the horses.”
While you’re watching the horses, you can also win competitions for best pants, hat or tailgate party. Last minute shoppers have flocked to Pink Stable in downtown Camden for fashionable outfits.
“It definitely affects business. We’ve had a lot of people all week and especially today,” said Pink Stable employee Melissa Rowell. “People usually come in for the weekend on Thursday because there’s all kinds of activities happening in Camden for the cup. We’ve had a lot of business in and out.”
While the racing doesn’t begin until 1:30 you will want to be out here much earlier. The gates open at 9 am.
