Kevin Hartley is helping the environment one coffee at a time

Tyler Ryan learns about the newest coffee player on the block and it's a game changer

CHARLESTON SC (WOLO) – Americans will drink over twenty billion cups of coffee from K-Cups this year, and according to Cambio Roasters Founder Kevin Hartley, although we may throw them into a “recycle” bin, only three percent of plastic is actually are recycled.  The rest take “another trip,” ending up in land fills and the ocean.  For Hartley, who was a senior executive for Keurig Green Mountain Coffee for many years, having the majority of fifty million K-Cups a day NOT being recycled was unacceptable.

In 2017, Hartley and his life partner, Ann Hutson, left their corporate jobs moved to the Holy City and started creating a revolution in coffee that would make a huge impact on the industry and environment.  After extensive research, and traveling across the world, Cambio Roasters was born, and in 2024, they changed the industry.  Their claim to fame?  Hartley says that they are the only coffee pod in the world that is made from aluminum, which calls a “magic metal” because ninety-seven percent of it is actually repurposed.

Not only does this “magic metal” ensure reuse, but it actually seals the true flavor of the coffee, whereas plastic does not…which did NOT go un-noticed by this Reporter.

Hartley is also very proud of the fact that twenty percent of profits go back to small family coffee farmers near the equator, through the Food 4 Farmers program.  Additionally, every purchase of Cambio supports organizations like 4Oceans, who have made it their mission to remove plastic from the ocean.

For Hartley and Hutson, coffee has been a life-long passion, and with Cambio, a mission to make the world better, one K-Cup at a time.
