COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The Union County Sheriff’s Office told ABC Columbia heavy smoke could be seen near the Union County Airport around 6 p.m., Friday,  which forced the airport to close.

According to deputies, South Carolina Forestry Commission crews were called to cut a path for emergency vehicles. When emergency responders reached the area, they found a downed plane that appeared to be a single prop.

According to the sheriff’s office, there were fatalities, but deputies could not confirm how many.

Deputies believe the plane was taking off from the airport, but they are reviewing video to confirm. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been called to investigate.

The Union County Airport is located in Union, SC.
