State lawmakers end special session without passing new rules for hemp-based THC drinks, edibles

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– State lawmakers ended a special session at the State House without passing new rules for hemp-based THC drinks and edibles, leaving the state with no law governing who can buy the products or how they are sold.

The debate over regulating the products has been underway for more than a year complicated by the fact that THC-infused drinks and edibles are already being sold in the state.

The latest attempt to set statewide standards stalled last week after House lawmakers voted down a compromise the Senate had overwhelmingly approved.

Lawmakers said hemp regulation will be voted on at the federal level in September.
