NRC chairman makes trip to SC nuclear plant
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The outgoing head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission stopped by to get a firsthand look at a new nuclear reactor under construction in the South Carolina Midlands.
NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko (YAZ’-coh) visited the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville Tuesday.
Earlier this year, the NRC approved a request by South Carolina Electric & Gas to build two new 1,100-megawatt reactors at V.C. Summer. The project was only the second to receive federal approval in a generation.
Jaczko says inspectors have found no major problems with the construction at the Summer site although there was a minor issue with rebar used in the base of the structure and that is being corrected.
Jaczko’s visit was planned before he announced Monday he was resigning as chairman of the NRC.
