Georgetown Coast Guard Station receives award
GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) — The Georgetown Coast Guard Station is receiving an award for always being ready.
Ceremonies are scheduled for Wednesday in Georgetown, where the station’s crew will receive the Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award.
Kimball was the general superintendent of the nation’s Life-Saving Service from 1878-1915. The service was a forerunner of the Coast Guard which was established in 1915.
The Kimball award recognizes Coast Guard boat force units that exemplify the motto of always being ready. About 15 Coast Guard units receive the award each year.
