Charleston won’t fight James Island this time

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — It looks like James Island can finally stay a town.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley wrote a letter Friday to James Island’s attorney saying his city won’t take the new town to court.

Charleston has sued James Island after each of its previous three incorporation attempts and won each time.

The man poised to be mayor of the new town says his residents are glad they won’t have to face another legal challenge. Bill Woolsey also says he talked to Riley and told him James Island would like to work with Charleston in the future.

James Island will be holding municipal elections July 31 for four town council seats. Woolsey is running unopposed for mayor.

About 85 percent of residents voted to create the new town in April.
