Claflin University kicking off fundraising drive

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Claflin University is kicking off a major fundraising drive with two events in Columbia.
School officials on Thursday are being joined by U.S. Rep. James Clyburn and Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin for the launch of a $96 million capital campaign.
Clyburn and Benjamin are speaking at a symposium of representatives from the business, political and university communities.
There is also a dinner at the school’s Orangeburg campus.
School officials say the Campaign for Claflin University is raising funds designated to strengthen Claflin’s nationally accredited academic programs. The money will also be used to build a state-of-the-art science and technology center and to fund scholarships and financial aid.
